English: Poh - Poh was the most respected person in the family. She had taught the kids The Old Ways to try and keep them from becoming Canadian. Although out of all the kids she seems to care less about Liang who was born a girl, and in China girls and women are known to be mistreated. Poh - Poh put Liang down by calling her "useless" making her feel lonely, unwanted, but that actually made her keep going, trying to prove her wrong that she is indeed not useless. |
Social Studies: The Jade was considered the most treasured jem in all of China. The Chinese word for Jade also happens to mean treasure in English. The Tree Peony is the national flower of China. It symbolizes luck, affection, and female beauty. The Jade Peony symbolizes Poh - Poh for she is the most respected and treasured one in the family, the time and affection that she has given to each child is a precious memory. |
